Scholarship Holder

Compared to his past, Sopheak has now left difficult times behind him, he is now a senior program officer for Health Unlimited in Svay Rieng.

Sopheak was born in 1983 in Kampong Cham and graduated primary school in 1996. He then started to help his family with their self-sufficient farming, which was their only means of income. His family then moved to Ratanakiri in 1998, where he he worked as motor taxi driver (motodop) and helped his family with their vegetable farming a few hundred meters from Yak Loam Lake, the local tourist sight. As a boy who was fond of learning, Sopheak self-study in his free time. In 2000, he then joined the Krou Yeung team and started to learn English. Though regular school hours and farming did not go together, he was self-driven to study hard and developed a passion for English. His hard work and good English skills rewarded him the financial support to go to Phnom Penh for computer classes. He came back to Krou Yeung Centre in 2002 and joined the teachers team as a full-time English and Computer teacher. Changing during the years to a part-time teacher enabled him to take up some financial studies which he finished successfully in 2006. The combination of his drive, his English- and Computer skills and his degree then provided him with the opportunities to work first as a translator, then moving on to a project assistent role and now becoming a project manager at the international NGO Health Unlimited. A true success story of one of our students who we are very proud of !!!
